Here at Priory Preparatory School, music is very much at the forefront of everyday life. From daily hymn singing at morning assembly to choir rehearsals during lunch break and orchestra after school, you are always sure to find the boys taking part in some kind of musical activities on a daily basis.
We are proud to have not one, but three choirs: The Pre Preparatory Department Choir (consisting of Reception, Years 1 and 2) the Junior Choir (Years 3 to 5) and the Senior Choir (Years 6 to 8). There is also a school orchestra, which is open to any boy who plays an orchestral instrument and has reached Grade Two or above. The orchestra meets once a week after school on a Thursday. For those playing woodwind there is a woodwind ensemble that is run by one of our peripatetic staff and takes place after school on a Tuesday. In the Pre-Preparatory Department there is a recorder group and this is open to boys in Year 1 and Year 2 and is held at lunchtime.
Many boys play musical instruments and everyone is encouraged to take lessons with our very experienced peripatetic staff. A wide variety of instruments are on offer, including all woodwind and brass, strings and piano. Vocal tuition is also available for any budding Pavarotti!
Throughout the school year the boys take part in concerts and in an annual Inter-House music competition. The Harvest Festival and Christmas Carol services involves both the Junior and Senior Choirs, plus some of our leading instrumentalists, which take place at All Saints Church, Banstead. We regularly make visits to Epsom College and St John’s School, Leatherhead for the respective Preparatory Schools Choir Festival and Orchestral Play Day. We also take the boys on music trips to our partner French school, Jean D’Arc (in Calais), and the famous Henry VIII Chapel of Eton College.
Over the years we have had the pleasure of appearing at numerous well known venues, the highlight most recently being the Royal Albert Hall in 2006 as part of Epsom College’s 150th anniversary celebrations. At Christmas, the boys look forward to entertaining at the local old people’s homes. The Pre-Preparatory Department’s annual nativity has become a highlight in the school calendar, and bringing the house down, with such delights as The Grumpy Sheep and Rock Around The Flock.
Priory Preparatory School has peripatetic music teachers who visit the school during the week and on Saturday mornings. Boys are able to receive lessons arranged through the school in a variety of instruments. Parents are invoiced by the peripatetic teacher direct with the school serving as the introductory body. Demand for lessons is high and parents may have to wait until a slot becomes available.
The following are currently being taught:
