For boys from Reception to Year 2, our school provides a sensitive and caring atmosphere, with an ideal pupil-to-teacher ratio. This allows us to give each child individual attention, and help him to reach his full potential.
In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework covering the seven ’Areas of Learning’ and in Year 1 & 2, Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum.
The children are heard to read on an individual basis, and daily reading homework is given – parental support is seen as crucial to the boys’progress. Individual class-teachers provide the teaching in most subjects, but as boys progress through the department, they also receive specialist teaching in Games, PE, Art, Music and French.
During the day the emphasis is mainly on developing literacy and numeracy skills as well as topic based work. Regular outings to places of educational interest help broaden the boys horizons and enhance the curriculum. Outside the classroom, boys are encouraged to take part in activities such as football, chess, art, speech and drama. They can also involve themselves further in music by learning an instrument and being in the Pre-Preparatory Choir.
By the end of Year 2, confident and increasingly resourceful children are ready to move into our Preparatory School.
