Priory Prep’s sports programme is aimed at offering all pupils a richness of opportunity and the chance to develop their talents and discover new skills. Our selective but varied range of physical activities contribute to the rounded education all boys receive at Priory Prep. Self-expression and personal development are at the core of all Priory Prep’s activities but above all, we run our sports curriculum to allow our boys, no matter their ability, to learn, have fun, and be with their friends. We believe in a sport for all policy.
We have been and continue to be extremely proud of our success in Regional and National competitions but our sports staff are just as focused on providing as broad an opportunity as possible for all pupils. This means a strong focus is placed on ensuring that every boy experiences the enjoyment and pride of competing for his school in the core sports.
Boys at Priory Prep will participate in one of the core sports each term, namely Football, Rugby and Cricket. However, in recent years we have made a conscious effort to broaden the offering of physical activities available. Throughout the academic year, all boys will also take part in a full physical educational curriculum, giving them the opportunity to develop skills in other sports like Gymnastics, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming. Other activities on offer include Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, X-Country, Fencing, Kayaking and Judo. We have also recently added a Target Rifle Shooting club.
The boys at Priory Prep enjoy wonderful facilities, including a recently refurbished sports hall which includes indoor cricket nets and a ten acre sports field a short walk away. We also have the benefit of using Epsom College’s swimming pool for Prep School swimming lessons during the Spring term.
Testament to the high level of coaching the school provides is the fact that in the past year alone, Priory boys have gained several sports Scholarships to leading independent schools in the south-east. In recent years, sports Scholarships have been awarded to Priory boys by Epsom College, Ardingly College, Worth School, Trinity, Ewell Castle, Box Hill and many others.
Our team of dedicated sports staff aim to offer our boys the highest standards of coaching and motivate them to develop their skills as well as have fun and learn the importance of good sportsmanship. Priory Prep can boast FA, RFU and ECB accredited coaches amongst its staff and also maintains strong links with external trainers, including coaches from Chelsea FC.
We believe that sport is vital for boys, channelling their boundless energy, and providing the chance to compete, to win and to lose – mirroring the real world in a safe and supportive way. Whatever their strengths or weaknesses, boys are encouraged to achieve their maximum potential in a friendly environment. We believe in the value of sport, not just in terms of the relationships the boys build with each other through playing but also the personal developments that each individual makes. As you can see from our Fixture Calendar, matches and sports House events are a large part of school life and I would encourage you all to support your sons at fixtures and in their sporting interests where possible.
